Fuel is only one piece
For most drivers who can charge at home, an electric car costs far less per mile to fuel than a gas car. That matters a lot in gig work, where you may drive 15,000 to 30,000 miles a year. EVs also skip oil changes and usually wear brakes more slowly.
What can eat into the savings
- Fast charging: public fast chargers can cost three times as much as home power. If you can't charge at home, raise the fast-charging share.
- Insurance: EVs can cost more to insure. Get quotes before you buy.
- Car payment: a big monthly payment can wipe out fuel savings. Compare the full cost with the car upgrade savings calculator.
- Range in winter: cold weather cuts range, which matters on long shifts.
Finding your numbers
Your electricity price is on your power bill (look for the price per kWh). Most EVs get 3 to 4 miles per kWh in mixed driving. For the gas car, use your real MPG from a few fill-ups, not the window sticker.
Taxes still work the same
If you take the IRS standard mileage deduction, you get the same 72.5 cents per mile whether you drive gas or electric. Lower fuel costs mean more of that deduction is pure savings.
