Plan backward from what you need
Most drivers plan forward: drive, see what you made. Planning backward works better. Start with what you need to take home (rent, car payment, groceries), then figure out how many hours that really takes once gas, car costs and taxes come out.
How the math works
Your take-home per hour is your app pay per hour, minus the share you set aside for taxes, minus your car cost for the miles you drive in an hour. Your goal divided by that number is the hours you need. The calculator also shows the gross pay and the number of deliveries that adds up to.
Picking good inputs
- Pay per hour: use a full week's average, including slow times, not your best day.
- Miles per hour: divide a week's miles by a week's hours online. 10 to 15 is typical in towns and suburbs.
- Tax set-aside: 15–25% of pay covers most drivers. Get a closer number from the quarterly tax calculator.
If the hours look too high
The fastest fix is usually not more hours but better hours. Driving the lunch and dinner peaks and declining low offers can raise your hourly pay a lot. Compare apps with the app comparison calculator to see which one pays best for you.
